Sometimes, life can feel like running a race with your feet stuck in concrete.
These obstacles might be:
- financial burdens
- challenges in a relationship
- feeling discontent with your job
- frustrated by lack of personal growth
Suddenly, the saying “it’s a wonderful life” seems like a cruel joke. Luckily, there are simple daily practices you can employ to help you start living a truly wonderful life.
Make time for the things you love
Often, when don’t feel fulfilled in life, it’s because we are too busy with work, family, and chores to make room for the things we enjoy. Now, I know what you are thinking, “I’m too busy for fun!” However, making time for the things you love can be as simple as carving time out of your morning to drink a cup of coffee on the porch or taking a bubble bath once a week. Find the little pleasures in life and start implementing them into your daily schedule.
Find purpose and personal goals
The pressure to conform or live up to others’ standards is not uncommon. We have bosses, family, and colleagues who desire us to act out specific roles and actions. Often, what we end up experiencing is complete exhaustion and a loss of our sense of self. Finding fulfillment can be achieved by seeking a purpose or identifying a set of goals that can help guide you through your daily chaos. These aspirations can be a number of things:
- career advancement
- fitness goals
- educational milestones
- monetary savings
- bucket lists
No matter the goal, having something that you can strive for may help keep you motivated about the future.
Get off the social media
Social media is excellent for connecting with friends and family, but it can also keep you in a constant state of comparison. When we see someone else share their vacation photos, new home, or a fun night out on social media platforms, we sometimes begin to doubt our own happiness. How can we live our lives sincerely and authentically when we have our noses in someone else’s?
Take one hour in the morning and one hour at night where you leave your electronic devices in a different room. Doing so will give you time to live in the moment and appreciate your life.
Take inventory of daily pleasures
It is so easy for us to get bogged down in the daily to-do list. Taking an inventory of all the good parts of the day before going to bed is one way to begin appreciating your life while also determining what it is that is holding you back.
Be open to change
Change can be scary, but it can also bring newfound joy and fulfillment. Don’t be thwarted by the “unknowns” of growth. Often, it is these moments of letting go that brings the most significant enhancement and excitement into our lives.
Stop looking for the “Big Fix”
I hear it all the time, “If I just had this one thing, I would be living my best life.” The truth is, there is no “big fix” that will transform your life into the perfect fairytale. Finding fulfillment in life is accomplished by appreciating where you are now and becoming motivated by the possibilities of the future.
Instead of seeking a “fix” or significant transformation, start making small changes that you know you can accomplish. Maybe you want to become a morning person or improve your running time. Small changes continuously reinforce a sense of pride and add up to a much more fulfilling life.
Getting caught in the mouse wheel of life happens to us all, but we don’t have to stay stuck in that cycle. Daily practices of gratitude and motivation can make a significant difference, and soon, you too will be living a truly exceptional life.
